Get control over your snacks! Learn two tips you can put into action today to keep your portions in control and put an end to that mindless snacking (sometimes off your kids plate).
Struggling to keep it together between meals is incredibly common even once you’ve mastered healthy balanced breakfast, lunch and dinner.
As moms, we are busy, tired, on the go and often thinking about everyone but ourselves. Even when everything else seems out of control, you can take control over your snacking (and gain a little confidence along the way) by applying two simple tricks.
Mastering snack time really boils down to two things.
Part 1: Controlling Your Portions
Now be honest, do you typically grab the whole container and take it with you to snack on? Or do you mindlessly snack straight out of the box while standing in the kitchen?
If you answered yes to either of those thing, we just found something really simple you can do to improve your portion control. Yay!
The best thing you can do to take control over snacking is portion out your snack and move away.
If you take the container with you or just stand there with the whole box and mindlessly eat, you will have no idea how much you actually ate and you will likely eat more than you intended.
On the flip side, if you portion out your snack and move away, you have control over exactly how much you are going to eat. In this second scenario, you will end up eating less and still feel satisfied.
In this video, I give some of my go to afternoon “healthy” snacks, but this technique can also be applied to treats. Decide how much you are going to have, take that amount, and walk away.
It sounds simple because it is simple... if you follow part two...
Part 2: Planning to Eat Before You Are Hungry
These two tricks work best together… If you wait until you are hangry, all control goes out the window. Hangry is something no mama needs to be, we are already tired and stressed enough.
Most of us have that regular part of eat day where we get hangry. That time of day when you always find yourself hungry, irritated, exhausted and reaching for whatever food is in front of your face. That time where you make poor choices that you kick yourself about later. That time where you lose control of your snacking and grab some quick sugary pick me up or stand in the kitchen and eat the whole box of crackers.
The trick to beating hangry is knowing when it normally happens and planning to eat before then. Pay attention for the next few days. Take note of when you are getting hangry. Then, as silly as it sounds, set and alarm on your phone for 30 mins to 1 hour before then and plan something balanced (with protein) to eat then.
Both of these tricks can be put into action today. There is no reason to wait to take control over this small part of your life. It may seem small and inconsequential, but when we start taking control over the small things we gain the confidence to take control over the big things.
